Bad Days and Big Plans: The Chronic Illness Life

  • by
Seleana trying to stay positive in the middle of a chronic illness flare up..

I want to talk about something a little different this week. If you’ve been following along on here and/or Instagram you know the past month or so have been difficult. Living the chronic illness life is (unfortunately) normal for me, so I’ve learned to adapt and keep moving forward.

However, over the past two months I have been struggle bussing through the biggest inflammation flare up in the history of pretty much ever. We’re not sure what caused it, but speculation says it could be my body reacting to being off the steroids. Now, my Pulmonologist at the University of MN said they would be out of my system already since it’s been well over two months, but bodies are weird. Who knows.

This flare was contained to my hip bursa and my tennis/gold elbow (thank goodness my lungs didn’t join in). The latter moved up my arm, went into my shoulders, and moved toward my neck. Muscle pain and lots of nerve pain impacted my sleep, movement, and by ability to even get out of bed on some days. Thankfully, I have knowledge about adapting my tasks, so I could still get dressed, take care of myself, and do what I need to, so I begrudgingly muddled through.

Did anything help?

Getting through the expectations and requirements of everyday life wasn’t easy. Especially when medications, ice, stretching, etc. didn’t even touch it. Not going to lie though, there were days I gave up. To be honest, it was almost a whole week. What has helped is a combination of Physical Therapy and my chiropractor appointments.

I did keep going to Pulmonary Rehab, as you’ve seen, but I had to limit what I did to the recumbent bike and arm machine (if my shoulders could take it). Weight bearing activities aggravated the bursitis, so I wasn’t able to work with different inclines or resistances. Relating to that, yoga was off the table. I’m not sure if I’ll go this week. We’ll have to see what happens and how I feel. I’m still having some issues, so treating them for a couple more week would be smart.

The chronic illness life has sidelined my goals for improving my functioning, training for the hiking season, and eating well. Now, I wasn’t eating a ton of junk, but my meals were easy and not really balanced. My intermittent fasting routine was thrown out the window too. Now that I am on the tail end of whatever’s been going on, I am working on getting all of this back on track.

So, what are your big plans?

I mentioned last week that I have booked my camping trips for May and June, but I also have plans for the end of April and August already booked. Now, I need to plan the ones I am responsible for in more detail, but the process has been started.

I do have some fun stuff coming up at the end of the month, which is where I am working on my sewing goal. I am sewing a dress. It’s going okay, but it’s more challenging than I thought. The first one turned out kind of ugly, but the second attempt looks better already. It needs some work and I’ll need help with some alterations, but it’s coming together. I’ll post photos. Cardybear might even make an appearance, so keep an eye out.

I am working on my goal of getting my apartment in order. My closet is getting cleaned out and clothes are going off to Trashie. I have a few other things to do in the closet before I can move forward with room stuff, but I have made a big dent. The other areas are up next. I want some organizers that I can’t fashion out of stuff I already have, so I’m saving my pennies.

When it comes to my goal of increasing traffic to Adventures of Seleana, I am doing research and looking into resources. If you have any ideas or things to try, please shout them out.

Remember to take care of yourselves and be safe out there! Seeyalaterbye <3
