Energy Conservation Series: Setting up camp

  • by

Hey everyone! Let’s talk about setting up camp in a way that will save some energy. This is tricky, because it can be a lot of work for typically functioning people too. However, I have some tricks I use that help.

Tips and Tricks

Again, some of these may feel like common sense…but they may not come to mind either.

Pull the car close

I back the car as close as I can to the place I put my tent as it’s the heaviest piece of gear I have. That way I only have to pull it out of the car (which is at a decent working height for me) and pivot about three feet before setting it on the ground. Everything else that comes out of the car will go into the tent or close enough that it will take less energy and effort.

Be repetitive

Repetitiveness and redundancy isn’t something that one should do all the time, but in situations like this it works. I set my camp up in a similar way every time. It takes the mental load of planning off my hands and things can get done more quickly. Not every campsite is going to have the same layout, so it isn’t always an option. You can, however, get close.

Get others (or your gear) to do the work

If you are with others, have them help out. They should be okay with helping you set up the stuff that takes a lot of energy. (If they won’t, do you really want to camp with them? I wouldn’t).

If, like me, you’re going solo sometimes, get gear that does the majority of the work for you. My tent has poles inside of it and is kind of a pop up tent. I don’t have to fight with the poles (because I know I would and probably end up breaking one) and the tent lifts most of the weight. I will talk more about my tent in the future, so be on the lookout for that. There was a learning curve, but now that I’ve done it a time or two, I’ve got it down.

Along with getting your gear to do the work, my air mattress has a pump so it inflates and deflates itself. I plug it in and let it do it’s thing while I am taking the rest of my stuff out of the car.

Take breaks and go at your own pace

Self-explanatory, but it’s one that is pushed aside often. The desire to “just get it done and over with” is strong, but you are in competition with no one and can do it all in your own time. Unless you’re racing the weather, then you’re on Mother Nature’s time. That’s a different story though.

Do you have any tip, tricks, or tried and true methods that you use? Shout them out!
