November Gear Highlight: Ice Cleats

  • by

Welcome back! Time to talk about an important wintertime tool–ice cleats. Mine have saved my butt, back, and neck from getting hurt when I inevitably slip on the ice in winter.

I believe these are what mine are called. I purchased them a long time ago and can’t remember, but they look like them. The are rubber with chains connected, crisscrossing on the bottom of the boot. I do like the chains better than the springs since those jam up with snow quickly. Same with the ones that have spikes only on the ball of the foot. Those kind have sent me sliding a time or two .

Likes

  • They fit any shoe I put them on. The rubber has some stretch to it, so boots to shoes, you’re covered.
  • The chains improve stability on the ice
  • They don’t damage floors if you walk on them since there aren’t spikes.

Dislikes

  • Mine rusted when left in my car for a couple winters (I couldn’t find them and was just about to replace them when I found them in a hidden compartment). They must have gotten wet somehow, even if they weren’t used…This one is more on me than the cleats, but you’ll need to make sure they’re dry.

Price

Like I said, I don’t remember how much I paid, but I suspect it was about $40. I did some scrolling and found different options in the price range of $20-$100. If you’re looking for ice cleats, there’s likely some out there for your budget.
