Hey friends! Going on an international trip? Want to keep in contact with the people back home? Well, you’re in luck! I’ve gone on a few trips outside of my country (Europe, Japan, Mexico, Bahamas, and Canada…plus layovers along the way) and have some tips and tricks for you.

Data for your travels:
Physical Sim Cards
This is what I’ve done each time I’ve gone on an international trip. I picked them up from Amazon by searching the country I am going to plus Sim Card. These are data only and have varying data and time allotments. All you need to do is choose the one that best fits your needs and put it in your phone when you get to where you’re going. Sometimes you need to adjust your APN, but I’ve rarely had to. Physical Sim Cards are good for people with older phones (like me) or phones that aren’t compatible with eSims.
eSim
There are a few companies that offer eSim services. I know of Airalo, Ubigy, and Saily, but haven’t used them myself. My phone isn’t compatible with them. When I went to Japan, Airalo was recommended and worked well for those who used it. The prices were decent too.
Renting Wi-Fi
Another option I have heard about is renting WiFi boxes from vending machine type things. I saw them at the airport and know of people who love them. They can get bulky to carry around, but are a good option if you need that kind of coverage.
Cell Phone Carrier
Most cell phone carriers offer some sort of international plan. All you need to do is call and get something set up with them. You could probably do it online, but be sure to get the cost, fees, and allotments available before signing up for anything. This can get expensive, but some carriers have good deal. It’s worth looking into.
Using Free Wi-Fi and Winging it
This is always and option, but can leave you open to vulnerabilities on open networks. It’s also not helpful if you’re in an area that doesn’t have Wi-Fi readily available.
Apps I’ve Used to Keep in Contact
- WhatsApp: My transport (booked on Klook) used this to contact me for pick up times. I also use this to talk with my international friends on the regular.
- Facebook Messenger: I have some feelings on this app in general security wise, but it is a good tool to contact people when you only have data or Wi-Fi.
- Discord: I use this on the regular. If you don’t know, you can chat via text, video chat, send pictures, etc…however, you will need to create a server and add people (like a normal group chat).
Got any other tips? I’d love to hear them. Comment below!
I am going to try and figure out a way to link this to the Helpful Resources page.
