Franz Jevne State Park

  • by

Hi friends! Today we’re going somewhere that is so far north we can see Ontario! Welcome to my adventure at Franz Jevne State Park!

Franz Jevne State Park Information

Franz Jevne State Park is located in Birchdale, MN along the south banks for the Rainy River. It’s secluded and peaceful with some beautiful views of the water. The park is named for a lawyer named Franz Jevne, who owned some of the land. His son donated the land in 1966.

Activities

If you’re looking to hike, there’s 2.5 miles to explore. Want to fish? You can catch walleye, northern, small mouth bass, and sturgeon on the Rainy River. During the winter months, you can snowshoeing throughout the park.

If you’re looking for wildlife, you’ll have the chance to see beaver, wolves, moose, and several different types of birds.

Camping here? There’s 18 drive-in sites, 2 electric sites, and 3 walk-in sites.

Other offerings

The park also offers a picnic area and picnic shelter.

Accessibility of Franz Jevne State Park

Parking

There are small parking areas tucked away throughout the park. They’re marked with signs.

Bathrooms

There are vault toilets available year round.

Getting to the trail

Finding the trailhead was a bit tricky, but I followed AllTrails and got there. It’s through the red gate with a sign warning of a steep hill that you should avoid driving on it with heavy loads. It starts in the campground.

Franz Jevne State Park Trail Information

The Franz Jevne Loop is 1.8 miles with 82 feet of elevation. I started this one, but I noped myself right out of there when I realized I would have to go up and/or down the steep hill. This is another one that is marked at easy, but would have been hard for me with just the elevation alone. If track chairs were available, it might have been doable. However with the steep hills and single person width nature trails, the chair might not work either.

Since this park is right on the rainy river, I found a stretch of beach on the lower rapids to hand out on for a bit. There’s upper ones too, but I didn’t go up there. You can see Canada from the beaches, which is cool. I got some good pictures.

My rating

This trail would fall into the hard category of my rating scale. The changes in elevation was the main factor. I know I didn’t complete it, however, it’s pretty clear from the map alone.
